Rent or buy a website: which pays off for your business?
Renting vs buying a website: cost, ownership and cancellation compared, with a 36-month calculation from market prices and a guide to deciding.
Contents
At a glance
- Renting lowers the upfront cost; buying costs more once, and afterwards the website belongs to you.
- Which option pays off depends on how long you will use the site and how much you want to change yourself.
How does a rented website work?
You pay a monthly fee and get a website including hosting and operation. The site usually runs on the provider's platform. According to my market research (prices as of 27 September 2026), starter plans cost between €39.99 and €99 per month. Providers with a setup fee add a one-off €149 to €490, and larger plans go up to €299 per month with a setup fee of up to €1,490.
On 1 October 2026 I analysed the top ten German search results for "website mieten" (rent a website). The word "rent" appears on all ten pages, "buy", "instead", "one-off" and "any time" on nine each, "monthly" on eight. Providers advertise "cancel any time". Check in the contract what happens to the site, the copy and the domain after you cancel.
How does a purchased website work?
You pay once for the build. With me that is €1,900, €4,500 or €8,900. No VAT is charged under §19 UStG (small business exemption). After that come the domain, hosting and, if you want it, website care, which starts at €79 per month with me.
What do renting and buying cost after three years?
The calculation over 36 months, without special offers, using only the figures above:
| Option | Calculation | Total after 36 months |
|---|---|---|
| Rent, cheapest starter plan | 36 × €39.99 + €299 setup | €1,738.64 |
| Rent, starter plan at €99 | 36 × €99 | €3,564 |
| Buy the Start package with website care | €1,900 + 36 × €79 | €4,744 |
| Buy the Start package without website care | €1,900 | €1,900 plus hosting and domain |
| Rent, multi-page plans | 36 × €49.99 + €299 to 36 × €199 + €299 | €2,098.64 to €7,463 |
| Buy the Growth package with website care | €4,500 + 36 × €79 | €7,344 |
The rental prices come from my market research and are not consistently stated with or without VAT; no VAT is charged on the purchase prices under §19 UStG. Over three years, the cheapest rental is therefore cheaper than buying with website care. The figures leave out what you get and who owns it, so compare what each price includes. Put your own rental price into the formula and calculate up to the year in which you plan to stop using the site.
After the 36 months the rent keeps running for as long as the site is online. When you buy, you only pay for what you add afterwards: hosting, domain and website care. Two things shift the result most: what the rental price includes, and how many years you keep the site.
Does the Digitalbonus Bayern make a difference?
Under the rules on the funding website (as of 1 October 2026), standard websites without deep functional integration into business processes are not eligible for the Bavarian digital grant, and neither are projects financed through hire purchase or leasing. For an ordinary company website the grant therefore makes no difference, whether you rent or buy. The detailed rules (in German): Digitalbonus Bayern für KI-Projekte.
When is renting better, and when is buying?
- Renting suits you if the budget is small, the site will only run for a few years and you do not want to change anything yourself.
- Buying suits you if the site should stay for more than a few years, you want to develop it further and ownership matters to you.
Is there a middle way?
Yes: you buy the website and add website care. The site belongs to you, and I take care of running it. What website care includes is explained in Website maintenance: what it includes and what it costs.
